Childhood obesity is a common problem. First, know that you and your child are not facing this challenge alone. In the U.S., 19% of children and adolescents meet the criteria for a diagnosis of obesity. Many more are considered overweight to a degree that has health consequences.  Obesity in childhood is a complex condition that is heavily affected by the child’s genetics and biology. It is NOT the fault of the child or the parent, and effective treatments to help children and adolescents achieve a healthier weight are available.

We know that most children and adolescents living with obesity do not “grow out of it.” As they age, they face a number of challenges and negative impacts, which may include lower self-esteem, bullying, reduced physical activity, and increased rates of  depression and anxiety. Additionally, pediatric patients with obesity are at risk of developing all the same complications that adults are faced with, including high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, earlier onset of cardiovascular disease, and even reduced life-span as they become adults.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends early, intensive treatment for excess body weight in children, ideally when a problem with excess body weight is first identified.

My approach to treating pediatric patients is family focused. We will work together to identify small, actionable steps that you and your child can take to improve their diet and activity level to aid in weight loss.  It is critical that the whole family participates to avoid singling out the child who may be struggling with their weight.  For teens, the visits will be primarily with the teen. A teen’s treatment plan will focus on helping them identify their own goals and motivation, and working together to find solutions they are comfortable implementing in their daily life.  Parent and family involvement and support remain critical to their success!

There are now several safe and effective FDA-approved medications available that can be used in pediatric patients who have been unable to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight on their own. I believe in offering all medically appropriate options to families and using shared decision-making to create a treatment plan that works for your child and family.
